Agricultural Co-operatives
Agricultural co-operatives are farmer-owned businesses that help their members access better markets, share equipment, and reduce costs. By pooling resources, small and medium farms can achieve the scale needed to compete with large agribusiness.
How It Works
Farmers pay a joining fee and annual subscription. The co-op then markets their produce collectively, buys inputs in bulk, or provides shared machinery. Surplus from trading is returned to members as a dividend or lower prices.
Legal Structure
Agricultural co-ops typically register as IPS with the FCA, or as companies limited by guarantee. Some qualify for exemption from Corporation Tax on certain activities under the Co-operative Act 2014.
