Credit Union Co-operatives
Credit unions are financial co-operatives that provide savings accounts and affordable loans to their members. They are not-for-profit, meaning any surplus is retained for the benefit of members — through better savings rates, lower loan rates, or community investment.
How It Works
Members save regularly and can borrow at preferential rates. The common bond (geographic area, employer, or association) ensures the credit union serves a defined community. Loans are assessed responsibly — credit unions prioritise repayment over profit.
Legal Structure
Credit unions must register with the FCA as an Industrial and Provident Society and are regulated by both the FCA and PRA. There are capital requirements and restrictions on the types of lending they can undertake.
