Worker-Owned Co-operatives
Worker-owned co-operatives are businesses entirely owned and controlled by the people who work in them. Each worker becomes a member after a qualifying period, gaining full voting rights and a share in the co-op's surplus.
How It Works
Members elect a board (or manage directly in smaller co-ops), set strategy, and approve the annual report. Day-to-day management is delegated to employed managers. Surplus is typically distributed as a dividend to worker-members or retained for investment.
Legal Structure
Most worker co-ops register as Industrial and Provident Societies (IPS) with the FCA, using "model rules" for worker co-ops. Some incorporate as Companies Limited by Shares with a shareholding cap. CICs are sometimes used for social enterprises.
